>ub40 have sucked for 20 years. period.
remember, before you respond to that particular piece of bait, that i respect them a lot for taking care of the jamaican artists whose material they cover not to mention that their covers often lead to the original artist being resigned and/or selling a lot of their old material (not that it particularly gets them anything necessarily other than name recognition which can lead to in person performance demand).
i wasnt born yesterday and believe in giving credit where its due.

Which is as it should be, moni - for my part, I much prefer their earlier stuff, especially Present Arms and its Dub companion. As a song I didn't like I GOT YOU BABE when Sonny & Cher first did it (when I was discerning boy ), so UB40's cover wasn't going to do it for me...and didn't. RAT IN MI KITCHEN however, did, does and probably always will

It's compulsory in reggae to cover the non-reggae hits of the day. Respect Gordy It's a double edged sword, ub40, aswad, maxi priest all got in the charts using cover versions of old songs. On one hand, they gave uk reggae to a wider audience ;D On the other hand they all got slated for selling out from the militant views, which ub40 & aswad had held. LOL 1 was the start of the romance with love songs ;D it was the right time, politics & people had changed.

I can still occasionally listen to the early stuff, but do find Traver's flat 'jazz, man' sax grates quickly. Can't recall if I ever saw this one done live, but I still think it's a worthwhile version of Roots & Culture: There were three doors leading from this room. The one that I had locked was pounding and bouncing in its frame: next to it was the one that we had come in through. It didn’t take much intelligence to use the unconscious guard’s keys to open the third one. It led to a storage room. Dark shelves, filled with nameless objects, vanished away into the distance. Not too promising but I was in no position to choose. I executed a quick leap back to the entrance door, unlocked it and threw it open, then dived ahead into the storage room. As I closed this final door behind me, even before I could lock it, there was a mighty crash and screams of anger as the assaultees finally broke the door down. Misdirection wouldn’t last long. Run past the shelves. Hide here? No-there would be a thorough search. A door at the far end, bolted on the inside. I opened it a crack and looked at the empty room beyond. Opened and stepped through. And stopped quite still as the guards who were flattened against the wall all pointed guns at me.
“Shoot him!” Colonel Neuredan ordered.
“I’m unarmed!” My gun slid across the floor as I threw my hands into the air. Fingers quivered on triggers-it was all over. “Don’t shoot-I want him alive. For the moment.” I stood frozen, not breathing until the trigger fingers relaxed. Looked up and quickly found the security bug in the ceiling. Must be one in every room and corridor down here. They had been watching me all the time. A good try, Jim. The Colonel grated his teeth horribly and stabbed a finger in my direction.
“Take him. Chain him. Bind him. Bring him.”
This was all done with ruthless efficiency. My toes dragged along the floor as I was whisked back to the cell, stripped at gunpoint, thrown to the floor with my black robe thrown on top of me. The door clanged shut and I was alone. Very much alone.

UB40 were bandwagon jumpers/opportunists. Every era of music has them. Bill Haley and The Comets (rock n roll), The Beatles (Mersey beat), Mud (glam rock), Stiff Little Fingers (punk), Flowered Up (baggy/Madchester), Menswear(Britpop).

I remember a JA mid 90s production of this song on 7", but cannot recall who recorded it. Any ideas?

Half Pint on Fat Eyes 7". Judy Mowatt has also covered it. Has it become a reggae classic?

I don't think so Abderhamane, I just remember it being played years aqo at a festi by a friend of mine and I never found out who did it. Cheers Have checked those two out - definitely not the ones I was thinking of, there must be a rootsier/harder cut
