I used to love that hologram thing on the cover! Respect Gordy PS: Dunno about the others but I'm not a secret UB40 fan, I'm a fan of their early stuff up til about 86. Last album I bought was Baggariddim and then I bought the Sing Our Own Song 12" but never got the album. Respect Gordy

I had the UB44 with the fancy cover. Decent album, but "Little Bagariddim" was shite.

UB44 - nice tunes but recorded very badly because they were all coked out of their heads when recording it in Dublin. Engineer Howard Gray did what he could with the tapes but no amount of tweaking could hide the fact that the drummer sounds like he's playing a set of soggy cardboard boxes. Better recorded versions of a few tracks could be heard on the contemporary John Peel session

Hiya Colonel Neuredan, you seem to know an awful lot about UB40...lol....are or were you a UBloonie once, or do you just read the UB forum frequently? The UB's don't like the album themselves, but the fans love it..some great tracks on it

Hello Moni - I was a fan of them in their (and my own) early years but pretty much gave up on them after 'Geffery Morgan'. Too many tacky cover versions for my liking, I'm afraid. I have some good memories of seeing them at the Birmingham Odeon circa 1981/82 though - still got the badges somewhere I think!

No, I've not heard it. If I see a copy for a quid somewhere I might be tempted to check it out one day. I hear it's more like their early works?

I have a 12" called 'The Earth Dies Screaming' which I got when it came out - about 1985, I would guess. I think it was their first record, so they were trying pretty hard and it sounded very cutting-edge at the time. I haven't played it for yonks, so I can't say whether it's stood the test of time or not.

That was 1980, H! If memories serves me correctly it was their third single - the first two being 'Food For Thought' / 'King' & 'My Way Of Thinking' / 'I Think It's Going To Rain Today'. I still have and like that 12" mix - it has the dub before the vocal, which, as a 13 year old, I was quietly impressed with

Going back to UB44 and listening to it again recently after a very long time, I was struck by how the very dry production gives some of the tracks an almost avant garde feel - 'I've Got Mine' and in particular the 12" version of 'I Won't Close My Eyes' which still sounds good (and strange) today!

or maybe they just include it in the track listing for the album it came with. i thought they were great up till labour of love: that was just plain boring and it was downhill from there. ub44 i rated but just barely and their formerly dynamic 12" releases went all sappy lovers about then too. i attribute it to getting their US recording contract (labour of love was first release on A&M if i remember right). but the live album right around the time of UB44 was nice too and little baggariddim had a couple nice tracks on it. by the way, suffering and suffering dub by nya and natty: look for it cause its crucial. that ub40 button above is some cheap bootleg...you could get real merchandise from them in those days and thats what i did...they didnt know what to do with US $ when i wrote to them so they just sent it back with the merchandise. that was cool i thought...they just said to mention them and play their music on my radio show i told them about. unfortunately right about then was when i stopped doing that. best 12" out of their corner of all time: DEP1, dont let it pass you by/dont slow down. when they started doing sonny and cher songs with the likes of chrissy hindend, well the writing was on the wall. one love llib haj

not of sonny and cher material, 20 years after the fact, in conjunction with a washed up pop singer, they dont.
on the other hand i hear they reimburse the original artists very well so theres something to be said for that.

adlew bj, ofcourse you're entitled to your own opinion, but you don't show much respect for other people I think...shame really and what does it matter how old a song is that's being covered, is it alright (in your opinion) as long as they pick "new" songs? I wish all songs were covered btw...everything sounds better with a reggae tune (just my humble opinion now)

colonel: its still a cheap looking bogus badge, i guess the money hadnt begun rolling in at that point so sorry for the characterization. as for the ub40 guy(?): >but you don't show much respect for other people I think because i dont like your seemingly favorite band? there is a shortage of eye rolling smileys currently so i wont bore you with one of those. here let me be blunt and give you something to call me disrespectful over, and believe me, i think i got a lot of support here on this one: ub40 have sucked for 20 years. period. "i got you babe, i got you babe". it was bad enough the first time. but i think you know that; youre just in what i call deep denial. one love llib haj
