There are loads of Velvets comps out there but this is one that seeks to be a bit more left field that I picked up for only £2. It goes for a different angle and misses out many of the "big hitters" and concentrates on perhaps lesser known but still fantastic Velvets songs, also throwing in a couple of live gems from Live 1969, presumably because they didnt have the rights to the versions from Loaded ("Rock n Roll" and "Sweet Jane"). You know from the very first song ("Temptation Inside Your Heart" as opposed to something like "Waiting for The Man") that this is a Velvets comp like no other, and in it's own way I actually prefer this album to the comps with the more "obvious " Velvets classics. "Temptation Inside Your Heart" – 2:30 "Rock and Roll" (live) – 6:03 "Lady Godiva's Operation" – 4:54 "Candy Says" – 4:03 "I'll Be Your Mirror" – 2:08 "Foggy Notion" (Reed, Morrison, Yule, Tucker, Weiss) – 6:38 "Pale Blue Eyes" – 5:41 "White Light/White Heat" – 2:46 "Sweet Jane" (live) – 3:57 "Here She Comes Now" (Reed, Cale, Morrison) – 2:03 "Some Kinda Love" – 3:38 "Stephanie Says" – 2:48 "There She Goes Again" – 2:37 "Run Run Run" – 4:20 "What Goes On" – 4:33 "Venus In Furs" – 5:11 (1, 6, 12) taken from VU; (2, 9) taken from 1969: The Velvet Underground Live; (3, 8, 10) taken from White Light/White Heat; (4, 7, 11, 15) taken from The Velvet Underground; (5, 13–14, 16) taken from The Velvet Underground & Nico.

Lovely box - only heard Spotlight Kid so far, but they seemed to have cleaned up some of the sound problems. SK always had great songs, but production was flat and muffled. In My Not So Humble Opinion, of course.

Why don't you look in the Captain's log ?
PS I thought you'd have picked something a bit more upbeat to listen to to the cheer yourself up after your boys lost to the Auld Enemy on Tuesday Roland ?

The Captain is upbeat in many many ways Heddwyn. And you're getting confused, my boys weren't playing even though the game did take place on the hallowed turf. Some 3rd rate imposters, who mostly ply their trade in the English lower leagues gatecrashed our stadium for a meaningless kickabout against a bunch of multi tattoo-ed, future tabloid front page scandal jockeys.

Any reports on the Captain's out-takes? Hmmm... I get the feeling that this will take a while. Haven't played that CD yet, and possibly never will. Out-takes are normally out-takes for a reason, the songs are quite often pish and have remained in the vaults gathering dust purely because they are pish and for no other reason. When they see the light of day it is usually because the record company is trying to bleed the carcass dry. There are exceptions of course, but these are rarer than hens teeth if you ask me. I would rather reacqauint myself with the 3 classic albums that make up the rest of this box set first, but rest assured if I ever get round to playing these out-takes Mr FD I shall give you my opinion forthwith.

Not sure how true this is, possibly just an urban myth, but it would be fantastic if it was true.
Bono once wrote a letter to Captain Beefheart asking if he would be interested in writing/recording together. The brief reply was hand written, and it said this:
Dear Bongo, No.

DeaR Funky Dread I fear Grip is right about the Beefheart outtakes disc - for Bfart fans only. One very nice version of Harry Irene. The box is worth it for the improved sound on the other discs though, if you can get it at a good price.

Thank you, R.!
The box is sold at play.com for £27 (incl. postage) at the moment. I guess I won't ever see it at a lower price, so I'll order it today.
