The hands of time were turned back last night with the Sir Coxsone posse out in full force entertaining an entranced crowd in the heart of Brixton. With resident Dave Katz away on manoevres east side in Japan, the floor was left clear for his 'Dub Me Always' guests Upstairs at The Ritzy to clean up.
The billed star of the show was Festus Coxsone - widely acknowledged as the greatest selector of his generation - the support came from his protege Blacker Dread, long time mic-man Denzil, Outernational stalwart Mikey Foreigner and one-time Coxsone moonlighter, MC Champian. Together, with old time corner men like Carrot & Milton in close attendance in the shadows the old time magic was created with music exclusive to the sound from Bunny Wailer, Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Viceroys, Jnr Delgado and many more; with history lessons & tributes from Festus; with a Coxsone dubplate intro from Nelson Mandela (oh yes) recorded on his visit to Brixton followed by heartfelt toasts to the great man from Mikey Foreigner and Champian. Add in a PA from Frederica Tibbs and an extension to nearly midnight and you have a very special occasion indeed.
In the audience : Terrence, southlondonstephen, Dubplate Pearl, Kingsley, Eddie Oxman, Duke Neville and many other celebrities.
What next? Follow Festus to Hay-On-Wye (of all places) 2 August and Tokyo (5 September) and on Facebook. Follow Blacker Dread to Brixton Splash Sunday 3 August. Follow the scene tonight (11 July) to The Golden Anchor, Evelina Road, Nunhead SE15 for Vinyl Extravaganza with hosts Sir Q (Expo 67 sound), Juicy & Supa Ron and guest Frenchy.
