Billy Bragg is very hit and miss; mostly miss in my experience, but there's one song he did about domestic violence which completely stopped me in my tracks; a song of great delicacy and anguish and - not something I ever thought I'd say about Billy - exquisitely sung too. Alas, I neither caught the title nor heard it again but I'ld happily shell out for the LP it's on even if the other 11 songs are filler.

The Billy Bragg track grumpy is Valentines Day Is Over from the excellent Workers Playtime album. The Billy track you're looking for Roland is Take Down The Union Jack from the equally excellent England,Half English

What! Flubba was wrong again?
It takes a certain kind of genius to be so monumentally wrong so often!

Thanks, Taff, that is indeed the tune. Just as good as I remember it. I like Levi Stubbs Tears (and indeed I liked the Four Tops), Mick, but that wasn't the tune I was thinking of.

It was called Simon. Named after the drummer from Magazine.
ps, can you tell me the magazine that recommended Rory Gallagher to you? So as I know to avoid it, thanks.

Lyrics from The Paw Paw Negro Blow Torch and Me. I rest my case, pure shite on an album with 3 or 4 good tracks and the rest is pure drivel
My, my my, we're treating each other just like strangers I can't ignore the significance of these changes But you can't treat it lightly, And you'll have to face the consequences All my worst fears are grounded You have to make the choice between The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch and me (no, no, no, no) By this time time I got to looking for a kind of substitute I can't tell you quite how, Except that it rhymes with dissolute (oh naughty, naughty): But my baby's so lazy, she is almost unable And it's driving me crazy 'Cause her loving's just a fable that we sometimes try, With passion, to recall... Send for an ambulance or an accident investigator He's breathing like a furnace, so I'll see you later, alligator He'll set the sheets on fire - mmm, quite a burning lover Now he'll barbecue your kitten: he is just another learner lover You have to make the choice between The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch and me...

Excellent stuff Pebbles. I'd be gutted if you liked it, couldn't ask for a bigger vindication.

Nice choice Gripe. I've been rolling a few Stereolab tunes again recently: Emperor TK is a fave of mine! I saw them play a few times here in Paris circa 91/2. Pilot
