Am near the end of a rewarding read of nile rodgers' autobiography 'le freak' . as ever the pre-fame years are the most jaw-dropping ; alternatively parented might be one summary . the way he atomises the chic organization sound and operation were fascinating as well as the uber-producer years, particularly his account of 'let's dance' with bowie from bumping into each other in a new york club to completing the album in 17 days same way. la madonna has just appeared with , er, duran duran to follow. one thing i'd totally forgotten or never knew was that shelia b devotion 'spacer' (killer at the time) was a nile rodgers production.
Any hoot, i treated the neighbours to these last night to a) complement the reading and b) celebrate my first new cartridge (with phat stanton stylus) in ten years :
Movin' - Brass Construction Backstrokin' - Fatback Band Good Times - Chic Le Freak - Chic Thinking Of You - Sister Sledge Come Into My Life - Joyce Simms Love Has Taken Over - Chante Moore Don't Look Any Further - Dennis Edwards Believe In Love - Teddy Pendergrass It's A Love Thing - The Whispers
Book highly recommended.T.

Make your next music book "Fever" the story of Little Willie John, legendary blues and R&B singer who inspired James Brown amongst others. One of the best music books I've read.

.. back with nile, the book kind of petered out at the end once he had reached a certain plateau of fame and acclaim. top scene on the way up when he and bernard edwards got the racial profiling treatment in an upper east side merx dealership - bernard came out with ' do you have a car to match my tie ?' and paid (for two motors - the other for nile) in cash. not bad. 7 out of 10 for the book.
