"What?" cries Beardy Pegley. "You check Chuck Jackson?"

It was 'I Don't Want To Cry' that Chrissie Pegley was raving over. 'Any Day Now' was not even released then.

You should remember, I *was* two at the time (and in Edinburgh). I was referring to a line in one of your old Runyon pastiches in the NME circa 1979, that became something of a catchphrase in my flat back in the day, especially after I bought one of Mr Jackson's LPs. Both "I Don't want To Cry" and "Any Day Now" are still great tunes by the way.

Killers all. Gotta love the Stateside label. I'd have to include:
LOOP DE LOOP - Johnny Thunder (1962) - murderous bubblegum soul - lamely covered by Frankie Vaughan DON'T MAKE ME OVER - Dionne Warwick (1962) - a Bacharach & David masterpiece KILLER JOE - The Rocky Fellers (1963) - a boss tune that always gets me dancing ONE FINE DAY - The Chiffons (1963) - Brill Building brilliance SHAKE A TAIL FEATHER - The Five Du-Tones (1963) - a dance-craze classic DENISE - Randy & The Rainbows (1963) - the one Blondie should have left alone CANDY GIRL - The Four Seasons (1963) - not one of their biggest, but certainly my favourite SALLY GO 'ROUND THE ROSES - The Jaynetts (1963) - simply, the best girl-group record ever TRA LA LA LA SUZY - Jean & Dean (1963) - great duet LOVE ME WITH ALL YOUR HEART - Ray Charles Singers (1964) an easy-listening lush-bomb IN MY LONELY ROOM - Martha & The Vandellas (1964) - probably my favourite of theirs ARE YOU A BOY OR ARE YOU A GIRL? - The Barbarians (1965) - as good as MOULTY. MICHAEL - The C.O.D.'s (1965) - a soul-stompin' shaker
