Following the death of Jamaican reggae singer, Gregory Isaacs, there has been confusion in the press as two women have been referred to as Mrs. Isaacs.
The women are June Isaacs who lives in Jamaica and Linda Smith Isaacs, a white woman who lives in England. But one of the women is quietly emphatic that she is the one and only wife.
The Jamaica Gleaner has carried stories from June Isaacs, the woman to who Gregory wed on December 1, 1983 and who has remained his wife, even though they have been separated. However, the BBC in London has been quoting one Mrs. Linda Isaacs, in whose house the veteran singer Gregory spent his last days while battling cancer.
According to a Gleaner report carried on Monday, “June Isaacs, the widow of reggae artiste Gregory Isaacs is this afternoon expressing deep regret that she was not able to speak with her husband in his last days … June and Gregory Isaacs might have separated seven years ago, but she says their friendship never ended.”
The BBC reports: “Isaacs, who was 59 years old, died on Monday morning at his home in London where he spent part of his time. He was surrounded by three of his 11 children and his wife Linda Isaacs who told BBC Caribbean that he passed away peacefully.”
One insider told chatychaty.com that “June is Gregory’s wife. Everybody knows that. Even though they were separated, they lived together in the matrimonial house where she had one side and he had the other. It was just about two years ago that Gregory bought a property in Marverly and moved there. Even though June has no kids for Gregory, she is the mother of all his children. Where were all these people when June a throw herself pon police car so police cyan lock up Gregory. Or when she haffi spend time inna lock up when police charge her with two guns that she neva know nutten bout?” he asked, hissing his teeth.
According to a member of Gregory’s management team, “As far as we know, Gregory and June never divorced. Gregory went to England in July to do a show and also to go into hospital and the next thing we hear is that he and Linda Smith got married. But Linda has worked with us for years doing tours. She is part of the music scene and does things for other atistes. I don’t know of Linda and Gregory eversharing an intimate, romantic relationship, so this marriage thing is more than surprising. It is shocking,” he said.
He added that Smith (who now calls herself Isaacs) is said to have married Gregory in July 2010 and reports are that by August Gregory had allegedly signed over everything to his new wife.
In an interview with chatychaty.com, his wife of almost 27 years, June Isaacs, says she too has heard reports of her husband’s ‘marriage’, and the fact that the new “Mrs Isaacs” had everything signed over to her. But June says she did not hear any of this from Gregory himself.
“I have heard of the new marriage and the signing over of the assets and I have gone to the Registrar General’s office to do a search dating as far back as 2000 – even though we were living happily at that time – and there is nothing that says we are divorced. I was never served with any papers,” she told chatychaty.com.
She continued, “Gregory and I have been separated for seven years and the question of a divorce came up only once. I went to him and asked for a divorce and the amount of ‘bad wud’ him tell me, I never brought up the topic again,” June Isaacs said.
June Isaacs says that when her husband was leaving Jamaica in July, he told her he was going to do an operation and then come home. But the surgery was never performed as doctors realized that Gregory’s cancer had spread throughout his body and there was nothing that they could do.
The member of the management team told chatychaty.com that Linda Smith had been instructed at that time to send Gregory back home to Jamaica, but she refused. “That’s why she says she’s not coming to the funeral, she’s just going to send home his body. Because she knows that a lot of people here in Jamaica are upset with her,” he said.
According to June Isaacs, she is in mourning for her husband and regrets the fact that she did not get to tell him good-bye. “I tried to get a number for Linda Smith but I was told that I was not allowed to call her house and that’s where Gregory was staying. It wasn’t until Friday that I was given a number and was told that Gregory would not be able to speak, but I could call and listen to him breathing. It took me a while to make the call and when I did, Linda Smith answered and told me that Gregory was on a drip and he was sleeping. She then asked me twice if Gregory and I were still married and I didn’t answer her,” said the grieving widow.
Her greatest wish now is that the funeral for her husband goes smoothly, without any drama.
“Gregory is now at rest. He is pain free. He taught me everything I know – how to ride a bike, how to cook. I graduated from Shortwood Teachers’ College and thanks to Gregory I travelled the world . I will always love him and be grateful to him,” she said in between tears.
