Been listening a whole lot to Madoo lately. I really think he is one of the nicest dancehall singers and he has a great personal take on that Horace Andy-patterned vocal style. Too bad just that he seemingly disappeared after the tragic murder of General Echo since I believe he could have done many more great recordings during the 80's. Would have loved hearing Madoo with the producer stallawats such as Junjo, Jah Thomas, Linval during the early 80's. 1. Osibert Maddo - King In The Ring (1983, Sunsplash Records 12") 2. Maddo - 44 Magnum (1981, Mukasa 12" - Madoo deejays!!! Anyone willing to trade/sell this one PM me!) 3. Papa Madoo - Sister June (1981, from Rock With Papa Madoo LP) 4. Maddo - Badder Than Them (1980, Godfather 7") 5. Bionic Singer - Botha Warning (1989, Jamaazima 7") 6. Osbert Maddo - Low Bum (1982, from You Wanna Turn Me On LP) 7. Madoo & Jango - Bite De Dust + Half Way Tree Killing (1982, D Music 12") 8. Madoo & Trinity - Few Shall Be Chosen (1980, Jungle Beat 12") 9. Madoo - Hands in the Air Girl (1981, from Roots Reggae Party Vol. 1 LP) 10. Madoo - Joe Grine (1980, Crazy Joe Gibbs 7") Also a special mention to his little brother Hugh Hugh who has a wicked album with Pop Style (Jamaazima)

That Papa Madoo LP pictured is high on my wish-I-hadn't-sold-it list. Nice intimate live in the studio vibe, a bit like `70s Studio 1. Was it recorded in Canada? You Wanna Turn me On is another fine LP, sold that one too

I always wondered who the deejay was on the Bite De Dust 12". My copy has no credits at all.

Yes, the label is wrong. Mine says it's Dennis Brown's "Let Me Remind You".

Yeah, it's the deejay piece that really makes it worth. I like the vocal version too but it's more or less Madoo doing an ordinary job ... the deejaying however is way tough.
Check your PM.

'It's Long and Stiff, And it make you feel Diff'.

Echodelic; Good to hear! I've been in contact with him through myspace trying to set up an interview but we haven't managed to do it yet! BMD; Yeah ... the slack Maddo just can't stay away. Did you get the 7" or the 12"? The 12" is more or less the same except for a nice long dub on the b-side.

Then do pick up that Bite De Dust 12" then. It's a great song that covers the lost of General Echo, Flux and Big John. Seems quite rare and I can imagine that one won't go expensive at all.

That Mukasa label 12" certainly takes me back...Mukasa was a little record store on Washington St. (?) in Boston's South End and Cleve Reynolds was the owner. The label art is by Magnus, a white guy who did a great radio show called Reggae Mukasa and then went on to do Boston's first underground hiphop radio show, the legendary Lecco's Lemma on WMBR. I knew him through an art gallery he was associated with, where I used to hang out as a wasted teenager. ;D He was the first person to turn me on to reggae - through him I discovered Dub, DJs, Ska, Rock Steady and so on.
Just recently, I found out that Cleve also did the old US press of Can't Keep A Good Man Down by the Immortals. Last I heard, he moved back to Ja. in the `80s. Mukasa changed hands and turned into Taurus Records, which eventually moved to the Mattapan neighborhood.
Great to hear that Madoo is alive and well and will be gigging here in LA! Who'd have thought?! He was said to be living in Boston while I was there (I think Dennis Alcapone resided there for a bit as well) but I never met him or even heard about him performing.

Wow! That is great info! I'll add this info to Reggaepedia when I return home from today's radio show. Did they ever release anything more than the Maddo 12" and 7" on the Mukasa label? Some more scans I had laying around...

Funny, I never even knew about the Ja. 7"s until now... I'm not aware of anything else released by Cleve but who knows, there could be more.

Saturday May 28 Dub Club presents Saturday Night Rub-A-Dub with MADOO SISTER NANCY SOOM T RANKING JOE TIPPA LEE at Echoplex, 1154 Glendale BLvd , LA
Really looking forward to working with Madoo, let you all know how it goes. I was talking to Tippa Lee about this show yesterday, wondering if Madoo would draw a crowd or not, and Tippa said, "don't worry about Madoo, he's a PHENOMENON" . So there you have it.

Yes, Mr Madoo is both quite new to me and also floats my boat. I first heard him at either Tighten Up or, more likely, Trash and Ready here in London. I am still exploring his output (not much is available on legit CD as far as I can tell).
Me and my mate Clive had the recent privilege of playing a few tunes on Mrs Trellis’s House of Reggae Friday night broadcast on ReggaeWorldMusic.com and the Madoo tunes we played were
Few Shall Be Chosen (w/Trinity) Yuh Jammin’ So (my fave) Coming From Town
Niceness!
