I bought a few bits today off a friend of a friend, some good, some not so good, but included in amongst them was an album by K C White on a red-gold and green label, Hawk Records with the slogan "Jamaica Pre-Release" and "K.C. White" printed on both sides.
It has no tracklisting and no cover, altough the master bag it came in has a £3.75 price on it and some felt pen work that suggests to me that it's the one it probably originally came in.
I can't find anything out about it other than there's a copy for sale on Lion Vibes and they've given a production credit to Linval Thompson.
I have to say it doesn't sound like Linval to me. The record is UK pressed, but the musicianship is slightly wierd, particularly on the first three tracks. It has syndrums (!!) that dates it pretty well, and my guess is that it was recorded in the US or Canada. Nothing to go on apart from that. Has a mixture of lovers and roots on it, OK remake of 'Anywhere But Nowhere' and quite a tuff remake of 'No No No' where they have really tried to imitate the Gussie version.
Anyone have more info on this - gaps to fill, correct titles, any provenance for that LT production credit, or perhaps knows where KC White was around 1978/79 ?
TIA,
Matty

That's not the album, but possibly some of the tracks are the same - there are no dubs on the one I have. My guess at the titles are:
1. Ain't no Use (possibly 'Not Forgiven'). 2. Not the Man for You (on 'No No No' ridim, but not the same cut as the later track). 3. Anywhere but Nowhere. 4. Throw Me Corn (Dennis Walks song, not Larry & Alvin). 5. I Won't Cry.
6. Can't Sleep at Nights (without it). 7. No No No (with syndrums). 8. Not Me. - (killer track, nice horns) 9. Live Upright. 10. You Lie to Me
So, looking again there are a few similar tracks and they do have that rather 'plain' sound that I associate with Harry J, meaning evrything clear in the mix, no distortions, not much echo or treatments, so they could be the exact same ones.
Thanks for the tip.

I have this album on the same Hawk label. I'm not sure if this is the same Hawk label that put out singles by Ram and Tam, aka Ray Morrison and his girlfriend Tamara. Ray used to have a restaurant/club in Swiss Cottage where I used to DJ in 1975. One of his regular clubbers was the guitarist Oscar James, by now pretty far gone into an alcoholic state. It doesn't look or sound like a Linval Thompson production to me.

Reel Hi, I have posted this question in another forum but also here as it's quicker to find some info etc. The Ray Morrison you refer to that was involved with Hawk Records is the same Ray Morrison that ran the club in Swiss Cottage. Ray Morrison aka Raymond Morrison was the founder of The Ramong Sound that evolved into The Foundations. Of course they went on to have hits with "Baby, Now That I've Found You", "Build Me Up Buttercup" etc. He's also the guy that paired with Tamara Davis / Davies as Ram & Tam. Be interested to know what you can remember about the club there and any other info. Cheers electric
