Funnily enough I too was intruced to him by Billy Bragg, not personally obviously, through I Dreamt I Saw Phil Ochs Last Night. Now one of my favourite artists & massively under rated,White Boots Marching In A Yellow Land pisses over anything Dylan was doing around that time. Tragically he met a premature & suspicious death before he achieved any sort of recognition.

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 - Many Things
Today I was pleasantly surprised to find this album in the record store. His live show (also with Fela's Egypt 80 band) blew me away last year. I'm not overly impressed by Femi, but it seems like Fela's youngest son Seun has inherited all the right afrobeat genes.

Oh I marched to the battle of New Orleans At the end of the early British war The young land started growing The young blood started flowing But I ain't marchin' anymore
For I've killed my share of Indians In a thousand different fights I was there at the Little Big Horn I heard many men lying I saw many more dying But I ain't marchin' anymore
It's always the old to lead us to the war It's always the young to fall Now look at all we've won with the saber and the gun Tell me is it worth it all
For I stole California from the Mexican land Fought in the bloody Civil War Yes I even killed my brothers And so many others But I ain't marchin' anymore
For I marched to the battles of the German trench In a war that was bound to end all wars Oh I must have killed a million men And now they want me back again But I ain't marchin' anymore
It's always the old to lead us to the war It's always the young to fall Now look at all we've won with the saber and the gun Tell me is it worth it all
For I flew the final mission in the Japanese sky Set off the mighty mushroom roar When I saw the cities burning I knew that I was learning That I ain't marchin' anymore
Now the labor leader's screamin' when they close the missile plants, United Fruit screams at the Cuban shore, Call it "Peace" or call it "Treason," Call it "Love" or call it "Reason," But I ain't marchin' any more, No I ain't marchin' any more
Phil Ochs - I Ain't Marching Anymore

Thanks for the Seun Kuti tip, Riddimsticks. He's booked for a gig here in Helsinki in august (yes, I've got a ticket) and I'm looking forward to that album.
My album of the day: Link Wray - Shadowman
The business. I happened to pick it up from the "clearance sale" bin at our local library today. I knew what I had in my hands of course. Got a copy of Oumou Sangare's 'Worotan' from that same bin. A real bargain I would say - they cost 1 euro each.

Dead Moon - Dead Ahead Their last under that name. One anthem after another. "In the waiting" is a midtempo heartbreaker that Mick & Keith would be hard-pressed to match - especially these days.

Just listening to the Soundways "Nigeria Rock Special" and I have to say I'm surprisingly impressed!
I was unsure on whether to buy this after the Disco Special and an average review in the Independent. Buy without hesitation, it's fantastic fuzzy shit ;D

Lham de Foc - Canco de Dona i Home I love medieval (secular) music and this duo/band from Valencia mixes their variety of it with all sorts of Mediterranean traditional music - which I also happen to love. Ouds, luthes, bagpipes, hurdygurdys, hand drums etc. abound. How can you fail with that? They don't. Sublime stuff all the way through.

Again on an Alterna-Twang kick that does not seem to be going away I Can Lick Any SONOFABITCH In The House- Creepy Little Noises I described it as this to my wife- "You know when Drive By Truckers have a turd? Then they follow it up with an absolute pearl, so you sit and listen to the turd over and over trying to make it a pearl? Well, this record, although unrelated, looks a lot like the pearls". If that ain't a great record review, I don't know what is

The Disco Funk Special is great, and judging by the samples I heard so far, the Rock Special should be awesome as well. I'm still waiting for it to arrive at my record dealer's though... What I did find was the latest Strut Nigeria '70's release - crucial stuff, my non-reggae album of the day. www.strut-records.com/nigeria70/I'm glad Strut has risen out of the grave. I hope they will also reprint the first Nigeria '70 set, because disc 2 of my copy (and of the other copies I've checked) was flawed...

The Bevis Frond - New River Head. Like most Bevis LPs, it's not all great, but the best songs are sheer bliss.

Various Artists: Heartbeats - Native Sounds From the Hearts of Europe (Special Delivery cd 1988)
Well, damn! I just picked out this record from the depths of my cd cupboard last evening. I haven't played it for several years, so I had completely forgotten how brilliant the music on it is. Nice to come across an old favourite again. Special favourites: 'I Fought the Law' by Oysterband featuring Yarinistan and 'Ale Brider' by Klezmatics featuring Les Misérables Brass Band. Oh, and Les Misérables also do their version of 'Phoenix City'...

Been listening to the Egg's sophomore set, TRAVELATOR from 1998 - a more than worthy follow up to 1996's ALBUMEN debut. Mostly instrumental (and guitar/keyboard-led) this album even features sound effects redolent of a Scratch or Mighty 2 t'ing

was yesterday and will propably be today: Martá Sebestyén - 'Dudoltam en' (Hungaroton, 1986). The same album that Hannibal released in the west as 'Martá Sebestyén - Muzsikas' in 1987. I had it on a tape back then and I rediscovered it a couple of days ago. A lovely album, if you are into the Eastern European folk music kind of a thing. And not an English patient in sight, not even in the horizon...

'Aman Aman - Música i cants sefardis d'orient i occident' (Galileo, 2007).
A L'Ham de Foc project, and even better than the two L'Ham de Foc albums I have heard. Absolutely beautiful sefardic jewish music from the Mediterranean. Subtle but sumptous, and I'll stop there before I start to sound like a BBC record review...
Also riding high on the family jukebox: 'The Imagined Village'.
edit: fixed the year of that Aman Aman album. It came out last year.
