Niño Rivera - Jamaicuba. I think it's also known as El Jamaiquiño. I think Machito's Big Band cut the song with that name. Niño's original tune anyway and it's nice to hear an old Cuban tune about Jamaica.

Mary Wells - My Guy.
It was playing at the local supermarket today. I know its exact purpose was to turn your mundane grocery shopping spree into finger snapping fun, and - for me it worked. I didn't quite burst into a semi motown coreography, though, but I think I did whistle a bit...

Quoting Zapatoo: " My slow-burning favourite is:Nicole Willis & the Soul Investigators - If This Ain't Love (Don't Know What Is)" This has just been repressed on 7" - the original selling on eBay for a bit (already!!) cheers for the tip on the new single, but I thought the above was recent, so don't really understand how its been reissued and the original is selling for a bit on ebay. How strange. I feel like buying some more of the singles to sell later. it'd be great if this made the pop charts. It's good enough to be a big hit and it'd be nice to see a good tune on the pop charts. It's been a long time! The Cd this tune is from is great too, and I also have the 2003 CD, which while in a different style is really nice actually with quite left field production.

The Flirtations' song was released on Deram (I'm fairly sure about that) - the CD I have it on (The Northern Soul Scene) is "on" Deram - 884805 2 (1998) and is mainly blue-eyed Britsish soul-ish tunes: The Flirtations is the reason I bought the CD, though I'm pleased to have Frankie & Johnny on CD too 1. Frankie & Johnny - I'll Hold You - 1966 2. David Essex - So-Called Loving - 1980 3. Flirtations - Nothing But A Heartache - 1968 4. Fearns Brass Foundry - Don't Change It - 1968 5. Clyde McPhatter - Baby You Got It - 1969 6. Mickey Moonshine - Naeme It, You Got It - 1974 7. Ronnie Jones - My Love - 1965 8. Fantastics - Ask The Lonely - 1970 9. Tom Jones - Stop Breaking My Heart - 1966 10. Billie Davis - Billy Sunshine - 1969 11. Amen Corner - Our Love Is In The Pocket - 1968 12. Dany Williams - Whose Little Girle Are You? - 1967 13. Eyes Of Blue - Heart Trouble - 1966 14. Bobby Hanna - Everybody Needs Love - 1968 15. Dave Berry - Picture Me Gone - 1966 16. John E. Paul - I Wanna Know - 1967 17. Elkie Brooks - Way You Do The Things You Do, The - 1965 18. Jon Gunn - I Just Made Up My Mind - 1967 19. Adrienne Posta - Something Beautiful - 1966 20. Brotherhood of Man - Reach Out Your Hand - 1971 21. Sonny Childe - Giving Up On Love - 1965 22. Truly Smith - My Smile Is Just A Frown (Turned Upside Down) - 1966 23. Stevie Kimble - All The Time In The World - 1966 24. Tony Newman - Let The Good Times Roll - 1968 25. Bats - Listen To My Heart - 1966

Your mind should indeed boggle over the Amen Corner tune, Stephen. As you can imagine, it doesn't quite stand up to the J.J.Barnes version ;D This CD I picked up for £2.99 at MVC last year sometime ...oh and favourite tunes remain both Nicole Willis and the Flirtations

Amen Corner - is that band named after the Amen Corner in Tooting? or are there Amen Corners all over the place?

Quoting professor: Amen Corner - is that band named after the Amen Corner in Tooting? or are there Amen Corners all over the place?
My guess (and that's all it is) is that Amen corner were named after the 1954 play of the same name by James Baldwin, which addresses themes of the role of the church in the African-American family and the effect of a poverty born of racial prejudice on the African-American community.
Yes, there several "Amen Corners" kicking around, perhaps the most noted relates to the 11th. 12th. and 13th. holes at the Augusta National Golf Club, where the U.S. Masters is played every year.
I think it derived its name from these holes being: a) situated in the furthest corner of the course, b) being extremely difficult, so... c) it's where "Amen" has been said to many a title hopeful's dream of winning, them having come unstuck on these 3 holes

That's the one -- big hit it was too.
Last time I heard of A F-L he was in the boring and friend of the Royal Family Eric Clapton's band.

If I recall correctly, "If Paradise..." shared a unique distinction in being a shared number 1 not with one other song but 2: Beach Boys - "Do It Again" Herb Alpert - "This Guy's In Love With You" ...this was on the Radio 1 chart (I don't know if it concurs with the GBofBHS Of Amen Corner's hits I like "High In The Sky" best (another on Deram!!!) I bought that on the way home from football (I'm embarrassed to say where - being a Spurs man) and also "Hello Suzie" - which I don't have in any format - when that was popular, all my hard-earned was being spent on Reggae! Reggae! Reggae!
