Nobody could put more emotion and feeling into banging a drum than Al Jackson from the MG's. Horsemouth is also a favorite. You can just feel the joy he puts into his playing.

Other long time favorites are Rashid Ali, Steve Shelly (Free Jazz), Dale Crover (The Melvins), and Sunny Murray (Free Jazz), and Hal Blaine (60's pop session guy - but check out his Psychedelic Percussion LP for some freaky sounds).

No one's mentioned the much-ridiculed (in a drumming sense) Ringo Starr yet!
;D ;D ;D
...though by all accouts he was underrated...

Earl Palmer, a real drummer, not an ignorant loon like Keith Moon.

Art Blakey, Tony Allen, Topper Headon, Gabriel Thobejane, Nelson Magwaza, Earl Palmer (Little Richard), Jabo Starks and Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown), Roger Hawkins (Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin), Al Jackson, Jr. (Otis Redding), David Garibaldi (Tower of Power), Greg Errico (Sly & the Family Stone), Maurice White (EW&F), "Funky George" Brown (Kool & the Gang) PLUS a lot more...

Though all that early Kool & the Gang stuff was/is a big favourite of mine - I'd never really thougt about George Brown's drumming, Matt...though it's very noticeable on the live albums...

Pete Rivera (Rare Earth) is up there, as is Tommy Aldridge (who like Cozy, played with damn near everybody). My personal fave is Bill Ward, who (along with Bonham) created the heavy metal sound by beating the living crap outta his kit...

Jaki Liebezeit ("tighter than a machine" - the rest of Can). Keith Moon (ignorant loon or not, he did something completely unique and the Who would never have been the Who if they'd had some competent or even inspired groovemeister). Melvin Parker (most of the great late 60s JB records). Ringo (there was never a great group without a great drummer - discuss).
