who was the vocalist?
obviously the tune is credited to slickers, who are known to be a great example of one of jamaica's harmony trios with a "fluid lineup" -- meaning that the persons in the group could have been any three of a particular five or six people, depending on the time and place a recording was made (or credited).
then there is the note in the inside of the "harder they come" lp that says one was in jail and one was dead by the time the record was released... some story like that..
so does anyone know, who really was lead vocal, and who was harmony on that day, for that exact tune?

Not that it really helps with your question or anything  , but I remember reading on here (I think it was by Penny), that it was written by Trevor Wilson, Delroy's brother, so maybe he joined in with the singing aswell... |

The son was written by Delroy Wilson's brother Trevor called "Batman", who was known as oner of the baddest rude bwoysof the time and was born into a rough family. The song is supposed to be biographical. Trevor Wilson was a victim of the badness in which he moved.
I think the lead singer on the Slickers song is D Crooks, Sydney "Luddy" Crokks'brother.

ok thanks all, and for what it's worth i've just gotten a similar resonse via email from mark gorney, who said same as above except that he thought the lead vocalist was trevor beckford.

I heard a cover of Boney M's "Rivers Of Babylon" done by some band named The Melodians. And I think Toots did a cover of "Monkey Man" by The Specials...

They're not a patch on the originals, mind. Some guy did a UK lick-over of 'Version Girl' to cash in on the UB40 record as well. Bloody plagiarists.

Not only that, but UB's HOMELY GIRL original was re-worked in a completely different style ( I mean, what were they playing at?) by a strangely-named group called the Chi-Lites. I think they were American or something.  As well as lame (by comparison to UB40) Reggae versions by Jackie Robinson and separately, Inner Circle  I hope UB40 got their due royalties for this  |
