Those early 80s dancehall album sleeves he created are as essential as the music on the albums themselves.

R.I.P.

I loved his lp covers. Sad, i remember hearing a while back that he had fallen on hard times and was selling his original artwork for $50 a pop.

Very tragic to hear. Would love to have known more about him.

One of my favourites with him;

Certainly is dogwarbossanova, it was included at his exhibition for Greensleeves cover art late last year in Broadway Market (Hackney)

R.I.P. jaamal pete, he did so many recognizable drawings from the early 80's channel ! lp's as well as others.

Kind of reminds me of the comments prog rock fans make when they hear Studio One, Treasure Isle or Black Ark recordings.

"The recording sounds like shit."

To each their own. Personally I loved buying lp's with his artwork. There was something about his style that fit the music in those sleeves in the early 80's.

What Yellowman and Ringo? Two novelty acts, both of whom are virtually unlistenable in the 21st century. Let's face it Marcus, Pete was no draughtsman; his artwork looks like a child's scrawl: all garish colours and lousy perspective.

My record collection houses Ringo and Yellowman records as well as Alton Ellis, The Tennors, and Delano Stewart. All of these are records I still regularly enjoy.

Like I said Penny, to each their own. As for Jamaal Pete. A lot of us liked his artwork, and as i said earlier it felt a good match to all of the above records.

It doesn't all have to be Truffaut and De Sica to be good.

JP's cover art is very much a part of the early 80s vibe of Jamaican music IMO. Yes Penny, he's
not Vermeer but I am fond of those covers, and as noted, in all things to each his own.

Why, as a sign of my American naif-dom, I've even been known to play Channel 1 recordings
of Mr. Foster in the 21st century. 'Gunman? Seh tell me where you get yuh gun from, it must of come from a foreign man...'
