ALTON ELLIS (1938-2008) - Godfather Of Rock Steady - REST IN PEACE


I have been informed by Mr. Owen "Blakka" Ellis that Alton passed away at 4:45 AM

It's the saddest musical day in years for me...why I feel so much more down now, than I did when the likes of Roy Shirley or desmond Dekker passed, I have no idea.

May he rest in a well-earned peace - duetting with Phyllis and Hortense now and again.

Very sad news indeed.Another musical hero gone.

I'm very glad I saw him live last year for the first time.Although he was clearly not in good health then he spread so much love and was really enjoying himself.Very proud of his son who helped him singalong most of the songs. It was really touching to see.

Condolences to his family and friends.

His tunes will always be close by to my turntable, and what a discography, too many great tunes for both Duke Reid and Sir Coxsone.

I was gutted when Coxsone passed on, but Mr Dodd just recorded and financed the tunes. Singers like Alton had the talent and made Studio 1 and Treasure Isle what they were. A legend of all music and so so many amazing tunes. His music will live on forever.

Yeah, i got pretty choked up reading the posts about his declining health over the last couple days - and i NEVER cry (well almost...)
I think it's the particular nature of the man's music, so deeply moving and emotional.
He was one of a kind...just the greatest.

PS: for anyone in LA, Monday's session will be chock full of Alton tunes, naturally.

Dear All,

So so sad. I only ever spoke with Alton once in Bob's shop. He was so angry with Coxsone that day - he was taking his coat off. and putting it back on again. Nothing I could say could calm him. Whatever Bob said to him that day cheered him up - and it was good to see him smile. Thats my little memory of Alton.

A great great singer. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

He had a lot of nice hats huh? Seriously though, the news made me very sad, perhaps because his songs are so moving. Along with Freddy McKay probably the most emotional, "crying" voice in Jamaican music.

Although i do not listen to muc of the Reggae at the moment,

Monumental blow regards to Alton, got to listen to his beautiful voice, recordings via D. Rodigan & Tony Williams [80's] WAS never disapointed...

Just dont know what to0 + ?

I'm gutted. I realize we are now at a point where many of the stars of entire era are passing on at rapid rate, but none of them make me a sad as this one.

RIP Alton, I'm glad I was able to see you perform once, and actually shake your hand and speak with you on another occasion. You will live on through my speakers for many years to come.
