Doesn't say much when you have to choose a do-over T. Sounds like Beres singing to big people to me

bad piece of tune mick - the way he rides it is very good, similar to 'people's choice' ray darwin ie behind the beat. jamaican music is built on do-overs, isn't it ? T.

My tune of the year so far is 'Peace Of Mind' by Winston Samuels. Actually it is not of this year but of 1967, when it was recorded for Buster and released. I've known the song for more than 50 years, hearing it first by The Marcels on their 'Blue Moon' album and then hearing the original version by The Spaniels from 1956 in the early 1980s. Samuels' rock steady cut matches the other pair in terms of quality.

As much as i enjoy that fine tune, i've heard a number of more solid tunes this year. On Gadd 59, i think the new Ras Nyto & Kenyans is better. Here is one that definitely tops them all, and there seems to be more on Mr Cliff's forthcoming album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAGIG5gORtI

I've just taken advantage of an offer from Trojan to download Jimmy Cliff's new tune "One More" for free, thanks very much!! Reminds me of the type of tune he did on his "Special" album of many years ago

Yes lankou, that's my kind of new tunes! Got all the 45s in last week and am working on a new modern 'roots' mix with these in it, especially love the Daville on Leggo Di Riddim and Mr Vegas on Rube Bway Be Nice.
The Most Royal riddim on the flipsides of the 45s of RBBN aint too bad either, but not as good as the others.

Inyaki, how predictable. You wouldn't know a good tune if it slapped you round the chops before breakfast.

A whole bunch of absolutely smashing old school gems on the brilliant album which includes that tune : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qF28HkwpzPs&feature=related Not the kind of act you're likely to see get a mention on many reggae forums these days but well worth checking out, like so many things on the Liquidator label, from Madrid (the Diatones are from Barcelona). Also expecting a lot from another spanish act, who have only released one 7" so far (easier to introduce them with the following tune for obvious reasons), http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fS-vp9pqicg but the other song on the B side is better and what can be seen on youtube seems to announce wicked things to come. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HixVbNtP6O4 Also out now on the same label, the perfect summer dance disc for all the retro heads : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OisOr8TYJPg (new LP just out now !). Not stuff that's going to get thumbs up on BAF or on Pama forums, but i'll mention it here. I don't know what CM has become of late but there were times when one could bump into broad-minded people here.

Some of that Spanish stuff is great but it's hard to get it over in the UK.

Yes, Gordon, i can imagine that. It's probably due to the fact that, given that connection with JA, people in the UK have rarely tried to grasp what was happening away from the UK and JA. Now that the tables have turned and JA music tends to be less exciting, most will still think like they used to and wouldn't be caught dead checking what's up elsewhere. Lots of very fine retro ska/reggae sounds in spain, but not just there. Anyway, it is very easy to order them for very decent prices on the Liquidator music website. The boss is a very serious person and alongside the thick vinyl LP's (he no longer bothers to release CD's), you get a dl code as well.

Another disdainful comment towards me ( I can't complain cause at least this time you spelled my name correctly! )
Once again you read too much into my post and take it personally as my tongue-in-cheek comment was referring to the quote (on the release). I'm sure they would smile at it.

inyaki old soldier the last person i actively disliked was mrs thatcher so please don't feel a way. gadd 59 productions are far from karaoke - you appear very distainful towards what i hear as incredible production work; a double surprise in fact - that a producer would run down the fine work of another. a final thought: as we all know mr dodd dusted off his most famous rhythm tracks in the late 70s, re-shaped them for the aural times and released incredible muisc by the likes of johnny osbourne, sugar minott and of course my girl jennifer lara. was that karaoke too? love, still T

Very different things. I don't understand why some people ( involved in the music for so long ) cannot see the difference. I'll just copy and paste here what I posted before.
- Voicing over old riddims on mastertapes with the original producers ( who actually produced the originals ) has been done since the 70s. Sometimes with very good results ( sometimes not). Like Coxsone and many other did ( and I do too.....over my old riddims of course not someone else's!)
- relicking an old riddim, re-recording it from scratch using different instruments is a challenge and can be creative too ( I do that ...like everybody else)
- Using samples and loops from foundation tunes and combining them with modern sounds and instrumentation can be very creative. I do it too
All that is producing.
But voicing over somebody else's productions using already mixed versions is completely different. That's for soundsystems ( specials ) or karaoke. If people wants to purchase is their own choice. No worries.
My only 'issue' is when these people call themselves producers ( and even credit themselves on records)....then everybody who voice a dubplate (special ) is a producer too ?
In this case they Gadd59 ( I thought it was Frenchie...my mistake ) credited the original producer. That was my tongue-in-cheek comment. About this release not about your taste. To me voicing over someone else's productions doesn't make anyone a producer. To me is the equivalent to playing tunes from a laptop over someone's else set and calling yourself a Soundman (I'm sure you agree on that as you play a real sound )
In any case, what on earth it has to do with me ''knowing a good tune'' ? A bit ironic since you have tunes that I produced or played on (even if you don't know it).

... I'll need to ask Phillip Gadd the next time I speak with him how his releases are put together - I can be as sure as i can that they not freaking mash-ups (sam cooke/elvis presley/lily allen@studio one: I rest my case). In any event, we seem to be in violent agreement - JA rhythms are held in common ownership & you guys are free to make the music we sound men and fans love. simples. you will have to divulge more of yourself on this :' you have tunes that i have produced/played on' . If I have bought it then it is good enough to play on my sound and nuff said.
if you don't rate 'set me free free' musically on any level i would worry, that's all. it ain't a mash-up believe me.
respect for the answer
T

Another massive tune from earlier this year from the ever-consistent Jah Mali, one to wipe away all the wankers currently degrading the dancehalls. Reggae with a purpose. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_5wTUhOR2k

Another 2012 tune i am enjoying, (well it arrived from Dub Vendor today) is Peter 'Roots' Lewis - Jah Is My Salvation on the Retro Beat label. Produced by Martin Campbell.
I believe Peter Lewis is the same artist that did the Facts Of Life tune with Mr Perry which was released by the Trybute label.
He might also be the same artist who recorded 'Ethiopian Land' with his brother(?) Paul Lewis for Perry & which is featured on the Trojan double disc compilation from 1990 'Build The Ark'.
