I heard a radio interview with Leroy Smart some time (two years?) ago. I think it was Carter van Pelt's great radio show on WKCR. But when googling I can't seem to find it. Does anyone know what podcast I might think of? He talks a lot about how he grew up as an orphan. A really good and interesting show.

Hi Kalcidis,
Not saying it wasn't a Carter Van Pelt interview but it could have been the Leroy Smart interview that the great great radio dj, and board member here did around that time period. That board member would be the man called 'The Favorite'...
The Favorite's Smart interview was a good one and I think they spoke about Leroy's childhood days.
I sure miss hearing The Favorite's radio show - even though he was on the radio, I used to catch him on the web when he was broadcasting in Northern California and then when he was on the air down here near San Diego. The latter is where/when the Smart interview was done.
The Favorite, I have tagged him the modern day Hank Holmes. I say this because I have not heard a better dj that managed to select both old time and newer Reggae songs. His radio show sets were next to flawless and the show flowed so perfectly from song to song. Outside of Holmes', I don't think I ever liked such a high percentage of a dj's set as with The Favorite.
He was also really good at interviewing artists. He never spoke over them, asked good questions, and let them tell their story. His interviews were as natural as his musical sets. As you can tell, I sure miss The Favorite's shows - tons of respect to that guy!
I think I might have recorded the Leroy Smart interview. Maybe The Favorite will pop in here and fill us in and/or mention the possible Carter Van Pelt connection...

I taped a radio interview from 1987...some London pirate radio programme interviewing Leroy Smart. Who knows where the tape is now! Went to to see him live a few days later and was very impressed by his performance, after that I did an interview with him ( managef to lose the tape! ), took a few photos ( and a few things happened that arent suitable for a public forum).
thats one of the photos ( Facebook Im afraid)

Yes, SM2! That should be the one and there wasn't a CvP connection other than that I heard the show in the same period I was listening quite a bit to WKCR and just figured it was from there. Haven't heard any other of The Favorite's shows. But if they were as good as the Leroy i'd be very happy to be pointed to where they can be found.
Inyaki: Brilliant photo! The man is a star.

Would love to hear the interview. I thought it was nice to read in Beth Lesser's new Rub A Dub style that he did a lot for people as well. Jah Thomas spoke highly of him (and Trinity as well) that whatever they bought for themselves they would always buy for everyone else...food, clothes, shoes etc.

i did the interview, but it was actually not on my own radio show.
my brother semindecent2 is right, it about two years ago when i had just moved back to san diego, and i was guesting with leading sd crew tribe of kings in their weekly radio show... leroy was passing through town. we had some studio time and then we went and did radio.
and i did post a link to it here... will look around for either the link (to see it it's still alive) or if not should be able to find the audio file and re-up somewhere.
semindecent2 is a hell of a friend, especially if you guys ever do radio! man i appreciated your interest and support... reading that post makes me miss doing my show. it's been awhile now. thanks man. it's not a jail sentence or anything, but it really is a fair amount of work that goes into good radio sets and it makes all the difference in the world when someone responds and is even enthusiastic about it!
glad to "see" you at all by the way... been awhile!

Myself and Colin Moore the Fencebeater interviewed Leroy. He gave a great interview.
When he asked if he would could some photos. Leroy jumped up and run out of the room. A few minutes he came back - with a different outfit and so on.
At that point we both pulled out a couple of very basic Kodak cameras. It didn't trouble Leroy at all - lost all of them in the fire!
All the very best Ray

Wow..mentions of two of my fave related reggae topics...Smart is my fave JA singer of all time..met him briefly at Strictly Reggae Records in San Diego during the Chris Martinez days (after Dave Allard gave up the shop). Saw him live a few times but the first time was my fave because it was my first real reggae concert. I think I was 16 or 17 at the time. Leroy played at the California Theater (or was it the Fox?) and was backed by a local band called Melting Pot. What a show!
Hank Holmes was a big influence on my musical taste as well. I use to tape Hank's sets on the reggae beat radio show then I would make entire tapes of the songs he played without commercials etc. I still have them and I need to get a cassette player to track those again.
Here is my fave Smart story.
I walked into Strictly Reggae Records one day before the Smart show in San Diego. Chris had just received the most recent Smart lp in his shipment. It was Let Everyman Survive on GG's (remember that one?). The first song is Let Everyman Survive and it is a great song. Anyway, this thin man kept on tracking that song over and over again in the record store. In fact, he would just play the first minute of the song and then pick up the needle and play it again. Everytime that song started this thin man would sing along and dance. It was clear he LOVED this song.

To continue..sorry
Please understand, I had never seen Leroy before in person so I did not recognize Leroy the first time I saw him (the thin guy playing the record!). Anyway, after about the 5th time he played the first part of the record, I strolled up to the counter and asked Chris, "what is that guy playing?". Chris said, "It's his record, that is Leroy". I looked over and said, "Is that you?" Leroy denied being "that guy" and walked out of the store. After a few minutes, I ended by buying that GG's record. Understand that at this point in my life I could probably only afford one or two LPs a month! As I walked out of the store, Leroy was leaning outside of the store just watching people walk by and listening to the music pounding out of the shop. As I walked away, I looked back and yelled "Hey Leroy! Look what I bought". When Leroy saw that I had the record in my hand he flashed me a big smile and then ran over to shake my hand and said "Bless". With that small interaction, Smart became my favorite JA artist. This was 1979 or 1980 at the latest.
sorry for the length.

great story arch angel! awesome... the chance encounters and the little reactions and touches are some of the best parts of the music!
and of course i love the San Diego, Lord Chris, and of course Dave Allard references. i recently took one of his old business cards over to Lou's and chatted with those guy for awhile. actually took Carter Van Pelt by Lou's when he came to SD a couple weeks ago too, and we of course talked about Dave again.
anyway i found the audio for this interview. if anyone wants it let me know.
